Welcome to Akwaaba Radio

A radio station born from a love of Ghanaian music and a belief that the world should hear it — all of it.

aboutGhanaradio

Akwaaba means welcome in Twi. It is the first word you hear when you land in Accra. It is the word a host uses when you enter their home. We chose it because that is exactly what we want this station to be: a home, and a welcome.

Why a radio station?

Ghana has one of the richest musical traditions on the planet. Highlife was born here. Afrobeats draws from here. The rhythmic DNA of a dozen genres traces back to this soil. And yet, if you turn on a global streaming platform and search for Ghanaian music, what you find is a fraction of what exists.

We built Akwaaba Radio to fill that gap.

What we play

We play everything. Highlife from the 1960s through to what is being recorded in Accra studios right now. Afrobeats, afro-jazz, traditional Kpanlogo, Mbalax from across the border, Afrobeat with the political fire Fela lit — and the contemporary artists who refuse to let it go out.

The schedule reflects this breadth. Sankofa Sessions for the roots. Accra Mornings for the pulse. Jazz × Accra for the late-night souls. The Griot Hour for the stories.

Live, always

We are always on. The signal does not stop. Overnight Waves runs from 10pm to 6am because there are listeners in New York, London, Tokyo, and Lagos who need music when Accra is asleep. We are here for all of them.

Tune in. You are welcome.
